Job description

We are looking for a highly motivated and skilled Postdoctoral researcher to join our international team. A central part of the research work will be analysis of quench detection and protection in accelerator-type high-field Nb3Sn dipole magnets.

In addition, the work can include quench analysis in high temperature superconducting (HTS) magnets, and participation to experimental work.

The work will be done in close collaboration with our international collaborators.

Quench in a superconducting magnet means a local loss of superconductivity which leads to resistive heating. Quench detection refers to the measurements taken to detect such transition.

Upon quench detection, a protection system is activated, which can safely discharge the magnet energy. Quench protection is assumed to be a critical issue in future particle accelerator magnets.

The researcher is expected to model quench propagation and the associated multi-physics behavior in quenching superconducting magnet and investigate the suitability of different quench detection methods in high-field Nb3Sn accelerator-type dipoles.

It is possible to expand the research also to HTS magnets. The goal of the research is to propose detection techniques, analysis tools, or magnet design concepts that well reduce the total quench detection system response in Electrical Engineering, or another suitable field

  • Understanding of the physics related to coupled electromagnetic, thermodynamic and mechanical behavior
  • Experience in multiphysics modeling, interest in using numerical simulation tools for magnet quench simulations, and participating in the tool development
  • Basic programming skills
  • Ability to work independently, but also as a part of a multi-disciplinary international environment.
  • Motivation and enthusiasm to learn new things and develop new technological solutions.
  • Good communication skills in written and spoken English.
  • Availability for short and a bit longer research visits to the collaborating laboratories
  • Experience in superconducting magnet technology is very useful. However, this is not mandatory if the applicant has other experience which helps to quickly acquire competences in this special technology.

    We offer

    The position will be filled for a fixed-term period of two (2) years. The starting date is as soon as possible . A trial period of six (6) months applies to all our new employees.

    The salary will be based on both the job requirements and the employee’s personal performance in accordance with the salary system of Finnish universities.

    The minimum starting salary will be approximately 3440 EUR / month.
