in Machine Learning for Wireless Systems

The position is directed to investigate design of fundamental theory and algorithms of machine learning applied in wireless communications and networks, its applications in sensing, and massive distributed networked applications.

The tenure track position is open to highly talented researchers who hold a doctoral degree and have an excellent potential for an outstanding scientific career, and master one or more of the above-mentioned research topics.

Furthermore she / he should be able to raise funding to build her / his research group within a few years supplementing the research portfolio of the faculty, research unit and 6G Science Flagship.

The position will start as tenure track from June 1, 2021, or later according to mutual agreement with the successful applicant.

The successful researchers appointed to a tenure track position may advance in their career through the tenure track process.

The position is placed Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering (ITEE, Center for Machine Vision and Signal Analysis (CMVS) (Centre for Wireless Communications (CWC) Radio Technologies (RT) , Centre for Wireless Communications Networks and Systems (NS) (Science Flagship focusing on 6G Technologies (

A person at any level of the academic tenure track system is expected to conduct outstanding world-class scientific research, to be competitive in attracting external funding, to publish in leading journals, to supervise doctoral students, to be an active member of the international scientific community, to create and teach related BSc and MSc level courses, and to exhibit academic leadership.

The position of an Assistant or an Associate Professor is initially a fixed-term position for five years. Career advancement in the tenure track system is based on assessments of the candidate’s performance and merits.

Required Qualifications at Assistant Professor and Associate Professor Level of the Tenure Track :

Required qualifications and career advancement at each level of the tenure track : Career advancement on the tenure track is based on performance assessments that measure the candidate’s merits.

Assistant Professor :

When appointing a person to the position of an assistant professor the applicants are evaluated based on the following criteria :

  • Only doctors who have finished their doctoral degree less than ten years ago can be appointed to the position of an assistant professor;
  • The applicant has a doctoral degree in a relevant field and has research potential (publications, especially internationally refereed publications;
  • participation in acquiring funding / funding granted);
  • The applicant is expected to have international collaboration record, ideally working in more than one research facility during one’s career (in most fields represented at the University of Oulu this signifies working abroad, in a different research institute or university, faculty or industry);
  • Experience in teaching and supervision of students.
  • Associate Professor :

    When appointing a person to the position of an associate professor the applicants are evaluated based on the following criteria :

  • The applicant has a doctoral degree in a relevant field;
  • Publications on an international level (dissemination, quality of the publication forums, references to the publications);
  • The applicant is expected to have international collaboration record, ideally working in more than one research facility during one’s career (in most fields represented at the University of Oulu this signifies working abroad, in a different research institute or university, faculty or industry);
  • Experience in teaching and supervision of students and pedagogical training.
  • Active role in the research training;
  • Acquisition of external research funding
  • An active role in the international scientific community, acknowledgments and awards.

    The salary range is roughly 3500 5000 € / month for an assistant professor and 4300 6000 € / month for an associate professor.

    A trial period of six months is applied in the position.

  • Other benefits : The successful candidate will receive full benefits provided by the University of Oulu to university employees, including free time corresponding to holidays and free occupational health care services.
